CRICKET AT ALFREDTON.

VICTORY FOR PAHIATUA A KEEN CONTEST. By a margin of 24 runs on the first innings Pahiatua defeated a combined Tiruumea-Alfredton side, in the return game played at Alfredtou during the week-end. Then O'Sullivan and Bentley became associated m a most useful partnership, both hitting out vigorously towards? the end. Both were caught trying to lift George Halt, O’Sullivan having notched 28'. and Bentley 25. The innings closed for 142 Hart took five wickets lor 41, and H. Smith and H. Wright divided the remainder.

Higginson and K. Raleigh 05>ened for Tiraumea and were shaping promisingly till Jim O'Sullivan beat Raleigh all the way with a clinking off-break. The same bowler tempted Higginson to hit one and Bruce Taylor took a good catch Len Heayns clean-bowled T Weston with a beautiful ball. Campbell Raleigh played O’Sullivan on and the home side were in a bad way with four wickets down for 22 runs. Hart and H, Wright stopped the rot and the latter hit cut strongly to anything short especially. A change of bowling was tried and Bentley straightway caught chid bowled Wright: 5 down for 60. Jack AlcKay took a turn at the crease and at once had the batsmen uncomfortable. This 16-year-okl left-hander learnt the game at Scicrod Heart, Auckland, and is the makings of a first-class trundler. Harry Smith took heavy toll of the other bowlers and kndeke 1 up a breezy 36 which included two sixes before AlcKay trapped him at silly point. Harry Burt taking a clever low catch. McKay went through the rest and after having 8 down for 88, Tirana mea finished up with 118, 24 short of Pahiatua’s tally. AlcKay took five wickets at a cost of only 15 runs, and two chances were dropped off him at that. O’Sullivan captured three for 21. and Heayns and Bentley took a wicket each. The visitors were entertained to*' luncheon at Hartley’s boardinghouse and a refreshing afternoon tea was served 011 the ground bv tbe lady supjiorters of th e district (beaded by Miss Beresford) who are noted for their unfailing hospitality to visiting teams.
