ALL-ROUND SUPERIORITY. Because of the lateness of the season Bush could not muster its strongest combination and in the circumstances put up a very creditable fight. Johnny Galvin and Udy ■were not available so Skilton plaved wing-tor ward. Trevor Rutherford filleel the vacancy in the pack, and Harold Reeves played on the wing, even though he was billed for a stiff fight at the boxing tournament in the evening. Bush started off well and for twenty minutes gave almost as good as they got. They tackled valiantly and had a counter for every thrust. Eventually pace told again and repeated passing rushes by the Auckland backs could not forever be dnerted. Stan Oliver led the Bush, team on but they Could not compare in size with the visitors who certainly “looked the goodf.” In the first minute the white backs opened but offside spoilt the effort. Jones kicked dead a moment later and Bush dropped out. Solomon tried to burst through and McSherry lined. The Auckland backs broke down and Olivant'"booted through. Bush clear- • ing. Bush did a bit of juggling on the line and got out of a difficulty nicely. Several times the j-ed forwards went through but Solomon marked and gained forty yards with a kick to touch. Weir ran across to start his backs but the Bush tacklet's was deadly and Mahoney dived to bring down Connelly. Reeves and Olivant followed up a kick by AlcSherrv and bustled the visiting backs. The ball was kicked through and Bush failed to pick up. Gnstofson kicked it out of his bands over the goal-line and raced after it but Connelly name up like a train and booted dead when a try seemed certain. Auckland swarmed down and Brown was caught in possession. Reeves cleared nicely but a visitor kicked back under the Bush goalmouth. Brown and Berridge raced up at the same moment and a try was imminent but jthe ball bit the goal-post and bounced neatly into Brown’s arms for him to clear amidst cheers from the home supporters. Corner let Jones away down the side-line, Brown tackling him gamely though be was hurt in the attempt. Play swept on to the corner where the reds kicked dead. Kahn set bis backs going but again the defence held. The Auckland forwards swarmed at-the line, Wolland speculating clear to save. Again the Auckland chain of backs got on the move find this time Connelly bad an open run to the corner. He clanped on a great burst of speed and left the reds standing to go over wide out. Auckland came through and Skilton failed to go down but the reds rallied round and Mahoney dribbled clear. At the Bush twentyfive Greville broke from a line-out. They failed to bring him down and Kahu backed up for the pass. Solomon joined in and ran over unmarked by the posts. Olivant intercepted a pass cleverly but was brought back by the referee, and Haslam followed with a good run in the opposite direction. Away went the Auckland backs in a pretty movement which ran the home rearguard out of position. Jones received and had a clear run in behind the posts. Solomon kicked high down to Brown who failed badly to take it and a bunch of whites dribbled over by the goal-line and Satherley dived to score by the posts. Corner converted and half-time sounded with the score reading: Auckland 16 Bush 4 On resuming McCarthy cut through and passed to Skilton, who kicked down. Auckland were penalised for a scrum infringement and from half-way Olivant made a brilliant attempt to kick a goal, the ball just falling short. The visitors opened out with pretty passing but offside play spoilt it. Gustofson and Oliver broke through and charged down a clearing kick by Bush. They dribbled on to the goal-line but Bush arrived at the same time and booted dead, much to the chagrin of the Bush supporters. The red forwards dribbled through and Skilton robbed Corner of the ball. Gustofson seeured and burst for the line. He handed to Oliver who dived over but lost possession and Auckland forced luckily. Brown, with a good kick, kept the whites defending. Fumbling bv Biddle let the whites right down to the Bush goal-line where Hadley passed to Satherley, who dived across hut was off-side. Corner set his backs going and Berridge ran Connelly into position beautifully for the winger to streak over at the corner. Beri idge failed to add the major points: Auckland 19 Bush 4

Haslam made a run down to the full-back, attended by Jones. Brown got the five-eighth and McCarthy intercepted the pass brilliantly to save a dangerous situation. Brown lined past half-way. Reeves gained thirty yards and Bush attacked. The red forwards worked down to the ime and Brown took a left-foot “pot” which re-bounded off an Aucklander. Gordon Alabey tried a long pefialty at goal but the distance was too great. A bout of passing by McCarthy, Alahoney and Olliver went within striking distance. The ball came out to the home backs but Olivant elected to “pot” and his shot missed the mark. The Bush backs gave it another go and Alabey carried on, kicking dead however. Rush forwards attacked at the corner and Gnstofson was nearly over, Corner and Weir eventually lining. Back came the Bush forwards and Mahoney dived on the rolling ball but it slipped into touch and the All Black forward lay hurt. He soon carried on gamely. There was a lineout on the Auckland goal-line and Wolland threw it far out. The forwards packed round and the leather trickled out to Skilton, who snapped up and hurled himself over by the posts in the arms of several tacklers. Biddle missed an easy kick: Auckland 19 Bush 7

McCarthy, in mid-field, dodged right through a press of visitors but his pass was not accepted and Bush kicked out fifty yards down. Mahone.y had to retire to the side-line with a nose that simply would not stop bleeding. Auckland broke through and Satherley secured to make a good run.
