THE BEST FOR YEARS.

pahiatua horticultural show A RECORD GATHERING. “The best show for years.” That Avas the unanimous verdict about the Pahiatua Horticultural and Industrial Society’s annua! show, lie id >n the J trill Hall on Saturday, ill almost every AA-av was it an improvement on- last year’s gathering. Entries Avere exceptionally heavy, and quality left nothing to he desired. The organisation Avas splen l d and the display ranked high in comparison Avitli those air other towns. The crowded stalls were a blaze of colour, a source of admiration and great interest to the public who attended ill very large numbers. Considering tlie season the display of blooms Avas an excellent one indeed. There Avas quantity as Avell as quality and the dahlias and begonias were 'particularly good. Air J. Byrne’s dahlia. “Aliss California,” was ranked as champion bloom and the champion rose was exit-luted by Air J. G. Gal land (Mangatainoka). The entries in practically every section AA-ere far ahead of anything seen for some years. It was nothing to find ten, or even twenty to thirty entries in certain classes, the competition being unusually keen. Exhibitors AAers represented from towns far and near. Seldom before has so muc-b nice fruit been exhibited, nor for that matter vegetables either. Everything looked very healthy and the potatoes especially attracted great notice. Air A. Eades, of AYood Anile, had a wonderful entry of 43 different kinds, whiie Mr H. A. Styles exhibited 35 different kinds. A strong feature of tlie show was the fancy work section, in AA'hich there was some really beautiful work. The display of blooms was the finest for a long time. The public Avere asked to judge the decorated tables for children and adults and this was no light task, so numerous and so art’stic were the entries. Airs Green just earned the verdict from Airs Goer, in a close go, and the children’s section was won rather comfortably. Even the cookery section attracted keen competition and the entries Avere surprisingly large. Tlie paintings and draw ngs AA-ere of a A-ery high standard. The children’s classes were absolutely a record, and the standard was agreeable high. Was it any wonder then that the shcAV AA-as regarded as easily the best for many years? In both, afternoon and eA'ening there was a steady stream of pair ns. some from WoodAille. Eketahunn and Palmerston North, and they found an abundance to absorb tlieir attention. Later in the eA-ening. mam-gfvthe exnibts were auctioned by Air W. A. Cittndim. POINTS PRIZES.
