SHOPLIFTERS SENTENCED “MY CHILDREN, MY CHILDREN!” Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. Two women shoplifters were sentenced by the magistrate, Mr Mosley, to-day, Anita Esther Wilson to three weeks in gaol and Annie Selina Kortegast to 14 days. The thefts had extended over a period of months. On hearing the sentence the prisoner Wilson cried: “My children, my children,” and collapsed in the dock. “BOOKIE” FINED. AUCKLAND, Last Night. “He was pretty cheeky all right, laying the odds right in front of the totalisator on th e racecourse,” was tlie comment of Chief-Detective Hammond at the Police Court today, in referring to Charles Herbert Geard, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having laid tote odds. Counsel said Geard had never been in any trouble before. He had met with an accident at work and was at present on reduced wages. “That is quite so,” said Mf- Hammond. “He was only a silver bettor.” Geard was fined £5 and allowed 14 days to pay. THEIR XMAS BOX. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, advised to-day that the Government had decided to authorise the payment of £2OOO for the relief of unemployment in Auckland as a grant, instead of a subsidy. Sir Joseph said that as a similar amount was inadvertently advised as a “grant” to Christchurch, the Government had decided to put all four cities on the same basis. TAILOR COMMITS SUICIDE. DUNEDIN, Last Night. A man named William Winefield, a tailor with a grown-up family, was found dead in the kitchen of his residence this morning with a gas tube in his moutth. At the inquest a verdict was returned of suicide while in a state of extreme mental depression, caused by illness. YOUTH’S SAD END. WELLINGTON, Last Night. At the inquest to-day into the deatli of Melville Wood, aged 18, who was killed on Wednesday evening through jumping from the aerial tower of the Wellington broadcasting station, 2YA, on Mt. Victoria, the verdict was to th e effect that deceased died from injuries received through jumping from a wireless .mast while in a state of extreme mental depression, caused by an attack 0 f meningitis. SC A LDED TO DEATH. ROTORUA, Last Night. An unknown man, poorly clad, jumped into the boiling Jake at Whaka at 1 p.m. to-day before the horrified spectators. Police and the Maori caretaker were soon on the spot with grappling irons and the body was recovered, boiled, an hour and a half later. It was removed to the morgue. The man’s age appeared to be 55 years, his height was oft 10 ins., and h e was or medium build. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, December 21. At nine o’clock this morning an elderly man, walking over the Grafton bridge, where there has been several suicides recently, saw a young man, with his feet over the parapet, apparently about to jump into the gully below. He caught hold of him by one foot and with the I assistance of two other men, dragged him to a more certain foothold. At the Police Court, Albeit Lloyd Addison, aged 21, a singl e man, was charged with attempted suicide. The police stated that he was a timber millmachinist out of work and was recently in hospital suffering from insomnia. Accused was remanded for medical observation. PRESENTATION TO MR ROLLESTON. At a largely-attended gathering of citizens of Timaru yesterday, the Mayor presiding Mr F. J. Rolleston’s public services, extending over 21 years, were recognised when he was presented with a gold watch and chain, a silver salver and a silver tea set.
