HAGEN DEFEATED PROFESSIONAL GOLF. United Press Aesn—By Electric Telegraph—Ulopy right. NEW YORK, October 4. Hagen was beaten by Diegal in the quarter-finals of the national professional tournament and his reign as champion is ended. Hagen started by playing sliaky golf and found himself five down after nine holes and he cam© back with a bare margin of two down at the end of the morning round. He put on a hair-raising rally and was just one down as he went to the 35th tee. The stag© was set for a typical Hagen finish. The hole was a 155 yard one-shot encounter, with no fairway; nothing but tee, green and trouble. Hagen drove within 13 feet of the hole and Diegel matched him and putting skill then decided the match. Hagen’s defeat ended a winning streak of 22 consecutive matches in the course of a five-year period in this classic event. WHAT DO THEY BELIEVE? LONDON, October 4. “I see nothing in evolution which conflicts with my belief in the Creation,’’ said Dean Inge at the Church Congress. “We must not defy the principle of evolution. There are those who think that time alone will bring the Golden Age, but th e Devil replies: ‘I am evolving, too.’ The idea of the evolution of the whole universe is contradicted by what we know of astronomy. -I believe tlie chief revelation tha't God has granted this generation has been through the natural sciences. If we denounce science, we do so at the peril of grieving the spirit of truth. Evolution is tlie only method whereby God carries out his purposes in the world.”

Bishop Barnes, of Birmingham, followed. He said: “Owing to humanity’s ancestral history, there is a tendency to attach exaggerated importance to the so-called laws of nature. Personally, I find plain evidence of a purpose in the prolonged development of life upon the earth, which culminated in the creation of , man. The belief of the survival of j human personality after bodily death is bound up in our conception of the nature of God. If we accept Christ’s view, we cannot believe God will allow anything of value in the universe to be destroyed, but we cannot say how man’s spirit and personality will be preserved AYe must be content with Saint Paul’s confident hope that God will give it a body.” “THREE CHEERS FOR THE KAISER.” BERLIN, October 4. Democratic newspapers have been protesting against monarchial demonstrations among naval officers. Prince Henry of Prussia called “Three cheers for the Kaiser” at the opening of the Yacht Club and all the officers cheered enthusiastically. The Alinister of Defence (Lieut.General Groener) issued a decree today, ordering all members of the Reichweir and navy to quit any function at which the ex-Kaiser, ©r any former ruling Prince is toasced, or anti-Republican demonstration made. ANOTHER OIL TRUST. LONDON. October 4. The “Evening Standard’’ reports that the plans have been completed for closer co-operation between the Royal Dutch Shell, Anglo-Rersian and Bin-mail Oil companies. The combined capital of the trio is at present worth £400,600,000. The deal, which omits Russia, because it refused to recognise the rights of companies whose properties were seized by the Soviet, will probably be followed by dearer petrol. POSTAL STRIKE IN CHINA. SHANGHAI October 4. A general postal strike in Shanghai, Nankin, Pekin Tientsin and the majority of North China cities is threatened. The Shanghai men are already out, causing difficulty in handling the mails. N.Z. BOWLERS AGAIN BEATEN. SUVA, October 5. The Fiji bowlers defeated the New Zealand bowlers by three games to one.
