With a superabundance of wheat grown within the Dominion, with the Australian wheat fields a few days’ steam away and with those of Canada also available to be drawn upon if necessary, the North Auckland Times complains that New Zealand has to pay a far higher price for bread than in England, where supplies have to be drawn from Australia and Canada. This, our contemporary points out, is due to the fact that the local wlieatgrowers have a monopoly of the market. Outside supplies are either prohibited or are charged with r. duty which will enable the local growers to obtain about 6s a bushel. Poultry' keepers are also handicapped by the high price of chick wheat, and dairy farmers by' the high price of wheat meal required for their stock. Thus the prices of eggs and milk to the, consuming public are also kept up at an

artificial level. Admittedly, it is desirable that New Zealand should be independent of foreign supplies of wheat, though there need be no fear, if we did not grew a single bushel, that foreign supplies would fail us or become inordinately dear. But if Canadian and Australian growers can grow wheat for returns of 100 s and 52s per acre respectively', why' shouldZealand growers demand 222 s per acre. Canadian and Australian growers have to find, their markets thousands of miles from their fields, while New Zealand growers have their market close at hand.
