PARKING OF CARS

ARE LIGHTS NECESSARY? The parking of motor cars in the borough streets was the subject of some comment hv Cr F. 0. Bourks at the borough meeting on Monday evening. He pointed out that motorists cam© into the town in large numbers at night it should he quite unnecessary for ’them to leave their parking flights on the whole time. In other towns, such as Palmerston North, owners were permitted to leave their cars in the proper parking places with the batteries turned off and so it should be here. Cr A. D. Donald: “Statutory law takes care of that. Jf we have any ‘properly lighted’ parking places cars can stand there unlighted. Cr Bourke said the boi-ough had iris parking areas defined here and he contended that they were better lighted than those in Palmerston N7>rth where the car lights did not need to be left on. Cr Donald thought the regulations would require the parking areas here to be specially lighted. Cr P. Tulloch: “I think Cr Bourke has brought up a very important matter. Tui street would make a splendid narking place. If a light was put there 50 to 70 ears could be narked. The time has arrived when we should have 'the lights put there and make it a special parking place. The matter was left at that.
