BOROUGH AFFAIRS

STONE CRUSHER SOLD MOTOR MOWER TO BE BOUGHT. The monthly meeting of the Pah- • iatua Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. C. Crewe), Crs S. T. Tinney, A. D. Donald, F. G. Bourke, P. R. Boagev. E. Harrison, A. W. White, H. T. Dawson, P. Tulloch, and A. Ross.

The finance and works committee’s report was as under: “Stone crusher: A tender of £3OO has been received for the purchase of the stone crusher, screen and motor. and we recommend that it be accepted “Motor mower: The committee recommend that the works committee be authorised to purchase a motormower for use in the town squares. The cutting of the grass has now become a big work, especially as the Post Office square and children’s playground have to be attended to and the grass mown. During eight months of the year, it takes a man’s full time to do the work and in the spring and early summer he requires assistance.

“The cost of a mower is from £6O to £9O, and it is considered that the work can be don© in less than half the time by using one. “It is also necessary to purchase a plough for use in the streets and watertables to do away with the old method of a. man and the mattock. The cost of a plough will not be more than £lO to £l2.

“A new N.Z. Ensign is also required and we recommend that the finance committee be authorised to purchase one. “Bridge protection works: The committee inspected the protective works which are nearing completion, but will hold over its report until the engineer certifies that it is completed. The. cost to date is shown in the treasurer's report.” The report was received and adopted.

A discussion on the stone crusher was taken in committee, and it was resolved to sell the crusher, screen, and motor for £3OO, to W. H. Webb, contractor. Tokomaru. ■Cr Bourke congratulated the committee on its enterprise in purchasing a motor mower but remarked that if the fences round the squares were taken down, the mower would have a clear run.

PEASE OF REC. TO BE TERMINATED. Cr P. R. Ron gey moved: “That notice he given to IV. E. Parker to terminate his tenancy of the Recreation Ground or. the expiration of one month from date of notice, and that t’ e L:id<ies at the entrance to the ground be repaired ” C’r He a rev pointed out that one of the stipulations in leasing the ground was that no cattle should be allowed on it. Despite this, during the past twelve months, Parker had had eairtie there continually. The speaker personally complained of fill's to the tenant, who, however, took no notice. Furthermore, when football matches were held there, Parker refused to open the main gateway to allow cars in, and what was worse still, through this attitude, ladies were prevented from bringing their perambulators in. The great inconvenience of this could well be imagined.

The motion was seconded by Cr Bourke and carried unanimously. Fresh tenders are to be called for th© lease of the ground. THE FINANCES.

REVISING THE BY-LAWS. The Greytown Borough Council wrote stating it had found that the cost of revising its by-laws would be between £2OO and £3OO a very costly item. By the smaller boroughs combining, each to have a set printed, a glean saving, about 75 per cent, would be effected. The opinion of the council was solicited on this proposal. The meeting agreed that the suggestion was an excellent one, and decided to have the by-laws revised, together with the other smaller boroughs.

Th© Mayor said it was very necessary to have the local by-laws revised. The matter had been discusis-
