MR POLSON A CANDIDATE FOR STRATFORD. Electric Toipwnnh— Association STRATFORD Last Night. In response to a unanimous request from a large representative meeting of delegates from all parts of the Stratford electorate to-day, Mr W. J. Poison consented to contest the seat at the coming election ■ Mr Poison, in accepting nomination. stated definitely that he opposed the present Government, but his attitude would be an independant one. Mr E. Walters, sitting member, and Mr J. B. Hine ,former member and Minister, have signified willingness to stand in the Reform Party interests. Strong representations have been made in all quarters of the electorate asking Mr R. Masters, who defeated Mr Hine in 1919, and who for six years was Liberal member for Stratford, to contest the seat in opposition to Reform, but he declined for business reasons. THE MID-CANTERBURY. ASHBURTON, Last Night, Mr H. M. Jones, who contested Ashburton as a Liberal at the last election, asked about his intention regarding Mid-Canterbury, replied he must stand. A petition asking the Hon. W. Nosworthy to reconsider his decision not to contest the seat already contains 409 signatures, mostly of residents of the borough and environs. It. is expected fo get twice that number with i n the next. week. FARM LANDS. WELLINGTON, July 17. Relief to owners of farm lands within boroughs not suitable for subdivision is provided for in the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill read a first time in the House to-day. The new provision is to cjvplv tw holdings of over three acres used solely for farming and which are not suitable for building purposes or likely to be required for such purposes within a reasonable time. If the council expresses its concurrence bv special resolution and the Valuer-General ng ess the assessment of the capital value is to ba reduced to an extent hv which the value of the land is lowered by reason of the purpose for which it is used. The rates on property thus affected are to be based on the new valuation. But this valuation is not to be valid or effectual for any other purpose. The provisions with the necessary modifications are to apply to any town district not forming part of any county. Several petitions suggesting action on these lines are at present before the House.
