TREE PLANTING.
IN PUTARURU DISTRICT
MILLIONS OF TREES
The magnitude of operations being undertaken by afforestation companies in the Putaruru district is strikingly illustrated by the following figures supplied by the manager of a certain group which is doing much to utilise vast areas of what has been regarded as useless land. In the nurseries there are from 5.000,000 to 6,000,000 trees ready for transplanting, while a further 200,000 are kept lying heeled in one block to supply the daily requirements of gangs employed in planting. The rate of planting averaged 1600 per man per day. and the total for the day’s work exceeds 160,000 trees in position ready for growth. Already 4500 acres have been planted, and it is estimated that approximately 16,000 acres will be covered before the season ends early in October. These figures would have been greatly exceeded but for the recent spell of bad weather, which has delayed the building of new' camps from which additional men were to be employed.
