A GREAT SPORT
RECEIVES GIFT FROM CLUBS
Electric Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 8. “A record of great service by a groat sport,” is how the racing career of Sir George Clifford was described by Mr Chas. Skerrett, vice-president of the Wellington Racing Club, when, an opportunity was taken at the Trentham course to recognise on behalf 1 of the New Zealand sporting fraternity Sir George’s efforts for the improvement of the sports of kings. Sir George, who, in spite of his age, appeared quite healthy and virile, was accompanied hv Her Excellency Lady Fergusson, Messrs J. B. Hnroourt (president of the club), and U. Sellers (secretary of the Riaci n g Con fere nee).
Mr Skerrett stated that Sir, George Clifford had been called upon to receive a presentation at the unanimous request of the racing and hunt clubs throughout New Zealand. Her Excellncy made the presentation in the absence of the, G overn or-Genera I.
Mr Skerrett referred to the splendid work Sir George Clifford had done to keep the sport clean and to raise its standard.
Her Excellency also referred to the unique record of Sir George and eulogised his work and presented him with a silver tea and coffee service, a clock and a large silver tray. Aider Sir George had responded, cheers were given for him and Lady Fergusson.
