The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 1924. THU NEW GRANDSTAND.

Work lias just concluded on the new grandstand at the Show Grounds and the structure was utilised tor the first time yesterday by the public who attended the Show. "With the draining of the grounds, It has involved an outlay of over £IOOO, and many will recall that the money for this purpose was raised by a carnival entailing much labour and thought, It was not surprising, therefore, that those who sought accommodation on the new stand yesterday were chagrined to discover that their view of the field in front was not enhanced by the design of the building or the formation of the seats. Nor could the enjoyment of those at the hack he said to have been heightened by the new conditions, for, to observe the proceedings, they were compelled to adopt a crouching attitude to follow the programme with any degree of certainty. The position, will of course, become aggravated during the next Rugby season when the I'nion is hoping to derive much useful revenue from grandstand patrons. We need not stress how desirable it .is that a clear ami uninterrupted view should lie provided for those who pay for this appointment, and during a spectacular football match next winter the inconveniences of the new grandstand at the Show Grounds wall become even more distressingly apparent than yesterday. To be numbered! among the well-wishers of the Association has always given us keen gratification, but it is certain that yesterday the public wlio were directly responsible for the. raising of the funds for the new structure showed more than a mere passing interest in it. A happy suggestion seems to. be that a full statement concerning the new stand, showing the cost and extras, if any, might l>a circulated together with plans for possible improvements, in order to arrest the swelling tide of discontent.

DAYLIGHT SAVING. The friends of the daylight saving movement, of which Air T. E. Sidey, the member for Dunedin South, has been such an earnest and eloquent advocate, are hoping that All* Alassey’s observations while at Home may have induced him to take a still inore tolerant view of thei reform than he did’ when it was mentioned in the House of Representatives. The New Zealand Sports Protection League is again, stealing its forces in action, and at its board of control meeting thus week adopted the following resolution: “The board of control is of opinion that the inauguration of a system providing for daylight saving is desirable in the interests of the community, and invites sports bodies, organisations, and persons favourable to this reform to co-operation with the New' Zealand Sports’ Protection League for the purpose of securing the passing of the necessary legislation during the next session of Parliament.” The Sports’ Protection League always has been whole-hearted in its advocacy of the reform, and business people are beginning to look upon the rearrangement of working hours more favourably than they did a tew years ago, but many of the country people still are suspicious of any meddling with the clock, and it is for the Prime Alimister to bring them to a proper understanding of the scheme.
