PAHIATUA COUNTY AFFAIRS.

(To Tile Editor.! Sir, —The members of the Pahiatua County Council mus't have been thinking of a penalty of AIOO each if the accounts showed a debit balance at the 31st March. They seem to have never left a credit ip doubt. lhe County Fund Account is only £4,571 and the rates outstanding £992, making a total credit of £5562. Thanks to the financial genius of the Council they have been able to extract from the pockets of the ratepayers such a modest sum. Really, 1 don t know that the few thousands are worth mentionin'!; as in these days we talk ill millions, and we have every reason to know, that the money is lying peacefully at the hank. I am sure that it ought not to give us any worry now. It may have to have goy it there. Just to show how infinitesimal that it is, Mr Editor. I will mention that the rates levied last year were £13,965. No doubt there are various excuses that can be brought against my argument, such as.ton not done, men are not available, material much cheaper, and Is pel day deducted from employees mages. •These are all contributing factors. 1 think it is about time ratepayers woke up to their own interest and elected representatives who mil grip affairs of the County in a businesslike manner, as many ot the piesent Council’s actions do not meet with, -he approval of ratepayers. A e only need to go back to the time when die council intended to appoint an engineer fully 95 per cent ot the ratepayers being against such an appointment, and, again, the giving value th^reserve at £IOOO- - W nut b*n surplus could have been used, 2nd this would have put the Council out of their estimates. t hat other miqmtons propo-d be <)t Kut on'io thl raU in the ° } tt£e'Z hesitation whatever in = a vim' that it would l>e a very great T ready cash.
