ROBBERY IN PAHIATUA.
LARGE SUM MISSINC. FROM CHINESE FRUITERER. Premises in Main Street, occupied by Wong Hee, a Chinese fruiterer and greengrocer, were burglariously entered some time yesterdajf afternoon and a sum of money, at first reported to be £SO, but subsequently said to be between £SO and £6O. wats discovered to be missing. \\ ong Hee’s statement is that he left the premises yesterday afternoon to proceed to a market garden, in Mann Street, a short distance from his shop. On returning to the latter some time after 3 p.m. by the front he noticed that a door in the kitchen, which he .had shut when leaving, was open. His suspicions being aroused that some one had been in the place during his absence he then discovered that the door leading immediately into his bedroom, which he had locked prior to going out, was open, the lock having been tampered with. Dy this time, Wong Hee’s distress of mind was greatly accentuated, for the lock of a tin trunk on top of some fruit cases in the bedroom, was found to be broken and a quantity of cash, postal and pound notes, placed at the bottom of tbe box, were missing, but the thief had considerately left behind the cheques included in the amount originally placed in the box. A\ ong Hee immediately on discovering his loss, communicated with the police.
It is evident that the-person or persons who entered the premises were acquainted with the premises and W ong Hee’s movements.
Access was evidently obtained by the back door, which- is minus one panel at the bottom through which an 'arm can he passed to place a piece of timber against th© door. So far. there is no clue to the mvstery.
