FRENCH POLITICAL CRISIS
THE GOVERNMENT DEFEATED. Electric Telegraph—Press Association Copyright. (Austrahan-N.Z. Cable Association.) Paris January 12. The Government was defeated in a confidence motion by 125 to 463, and have resigned. The crisis arose over ,the German disarmament and reparations.
Tile Deputies demanded instant discussion on foreign affairs, and the Premier, Al. Legues, desired to postpone discussion until after tile Conference of Premiers n,t Paris, in order 'to leave his hands free. He pointed out that other Premiers were coming with free hands and he asked for a. vote of confidence, which was refused. FURTHER DETAILS. (Received this day at 11.10 a.m.) London, January 13. 'lhe “Daily N e, ws’ ” Paris correspondent states that M. Leygue’s fall is attributable 'to the industrial crisis, unemployment and the frequent postponements of the expected German payments of reparations. The “Daily Telegraph” says editorially that some, of the groups have taken an opportunity of disapproving of Al. Alillerand’s avowed policy of active intervention in politics though the Ministry, which would be his own instrument rather than the Chamber’s. Paris press speculations as to Al. Leygue’s successor include Al. Poincare, Al. Viviani and M. Peret (Preident of the Chamber), whose speech was largely responsible for the Cabinet’s resignation. The crisis is expected to entail the postponement of the Allied Premiers’ Conference. A number of Deputies have giyen, notice of resolutions that all foreigners be expelled from France n.ext year if unable to prove that they have definite means of substance; also that heavy taxation be imposed on all wealthy foreign residents.
