The Government's proposals for increases in pensions and in allowances were placed before members ait the secret session to-night. The Bill dealing with pensions will be introduced without any delay. The proposed increased allowance to wives, children and other dependents of soldiers were explained to bon. members. The present liability for pensions is £443,000. Tine proposed increases on the present liability amount tK> £130.000. The estimated increased liability will be £573.000. If no alteration were made in pensions, the estimated liability in 12 months from now would Uae £823.000. Under the proposal tlie? estimated liability in 12 months from now would be £1,063.000. The estimated' increased liability is £240.000. 1 lit' allowances to wives chi Viren, guardians, and widowed mothers at the present rates would be £322.788. At the new rates they will be £711.464. The increase, if brought into operation at once, will be £388,676. The estimated liability at 30th September, 1918, -Tor tlie wives children, guardians and widowed mothers at the present lates would be £939.577. At the new rates they would be £2.03v,691. an increase of £1.098.114. At the present rates the liability is £322.788. At the new rates they will be. on the 30th September, 1918, £2.03 1 .b9l. of which £939.577 is accounted for by the increased number or wives and children to be provided for. Fi»ni the increase of £1,714,903 deduct £939,577. leaving £775.326, tor which the new rates alone are responsible. In twelve months tlie new rates involve an increased liability of: Pensions. £240.000; allowances £775,326; total £1,015,326.
