RUSSIANS SMASHING THROUGH.
FIERCE BATTLE FOR HALICZ
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Ass’n.) Petrograd, Last Night. The great battle of the River Narayuvakm, northwards of Haliez, has been raging for three days. The Russians attacked on Saturday morning, fighting hand to hand. Repeated German counter-attacks upheld the struggle for the village of Snistelniky, eastwards of the river. It changed hands six times. Armoured cars were most prominent. The whole first lines of trenches were occupied on Saturday, and. on Sunday morning the Russian infantry re-attacked simultaneously nine sections of the front. Three lines of trenches fell. The fighting is still of the severest.
