FAREWELL TO SCHOOLMASTER.

SOCIAL AT MAN GAT AIN OKA

Old pupils of the .Mangatainoka public school, and parents and friends, gathered in large numbers at the Library Hall, Mangatainoka, last night, to farewell Mr G. W. Chatwin (who lias been promoted to the headmastership of the Pahiatua District High School) and Mrs Chatwin. Mr D. Dull spoke on behalf of the okl pupils. He acknowledged the excellent training the latter had received at the hands of Mr Chatwin, anu the pupils thou gilt they could not let him leave their midst without showing their tangible esteem for their old master who had always taken au interest in their welfare. He presented AL- Chatwin with a very handsome oak smoker's cabinet, a sliield on which was suitably subscribed. To Mrs Chatwin he gave a handbag. After musical honours and cheers for the recipients, Mr Chatwin feelingly returned thanks, saying it was particularly hard for him to say good-bye that evening. That afternoon there bad been a similar ceremony at the school, when they liad all broken down. Looking round the room he saw many old </irls, but a lot of the old boys were on the battlefield. They could not help thinking of them that, night. Over seventy old boys had gone to the. war, and he suggested to the. Committee that, thei mames should be perpetuated by a Roll of Honour. Mr Chatwin also mentioned that seme of his old pupils would be with him at the Pahiatua school. Mrs Chatwin and himself were very grateful for the valuable presents they had received, and the hearty wishes which had accompanied them. The dance music was supplied by Burt’s orchestra, extras being contributed by Miss Kotlowski. and Mass D. Raynor. Recitations were given by Mrs Parkhouse and Master l H. Brown. The committee comprisKf Meters D. Bull, W. Brown, D. Brabner, R. Pilkinton and W. and ih Skiiton. Mr W. Brown was secretary. Supper was served, under the direction of the following la-diees : Misses E. R.van G. Tlionipson. E and M. Pilkinton. and Misb May. Among those present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Pahiatua, and many visitors from surrounding districts.

Old pupils in the Gisborne district, telegraphed a message oi good wishes to Mr and Mrs Chatwin.

At the Mangatainoka school yesterday afternoon, the children anil teachers presented Mr Chatwin with an upholstered oak Morris chair. Pemley FUvroey, a senior scholar, made the presentation. Cheers were given for Mr Chatwin. and the children sang “For he's a jolly good tellow.” Air Chatwin very feelingly replied.
