RECRUITS AND VARICOCELE
FREE OPERATION'S T'RGED.
A matter of close concern to a largo number <*:' prospective recruits was brought up in the Hous< by Mr Wilford. He asked the Premier if he would, as a matter of policy, arrungo with various hospitals for men suffering from varicocele to be operated on in the hospitals at the cost o% the State. He mentioned the ca.se of two men in "Wellington who were perfectly fit. save for slight varicocele, vet one of those men when he went to Wellington was toW that an operation would cost him £9 or £lO. Neither of the men could afford to spend I he amount, and he (Mr Wilford) considered Government should, os a matter of policy, pay such operations when men were eager to enlist. He understood the Auckland Hospital authorities made no charge in such ft case.
Mr Rhodes: Neither does the Thames hospital. Mr M as&ey: I would prefer that the member put the question on tho Order Pope* - . Mr Wilford: Rut. these two men oro waiting to-day. Mr Massey: My object is that these c.im\h should he investigated, as T have been given to understand that arrangements were made with hospital Boards throughout New Zrohiml to have 'iirh o*sw dealt with wheie operations are necessary.
