DISTRICT NOTES.

' MANGAHM-

(From Our Own Correspondent).

The sad fate of Mr J. Bradley, as chronicled last week, naturally caused. a sensation here, and very sincere sympathy was expressed on all sides for Mi's Bradley and her family. Mr Bradley in his soldiering days served Iris country in .the Soudan, China and South Africa, land it seems strange that he should have, escaped unhurt in his campaigning days to meet such a dreadful death in the comparatively .safe life of a farmer. Still, he died as a soldier would wish to die, in the execution of his duty. Mangahao is to lose some valued settlers very shortly, as Mr S. Hirst bjaving received an appointment as Huntsman to the Pakuranga Hunt Club will be leaving for thAt district very shortly. With him will go Mr Dodson, his wife’s who hasresided in Ballance and later Mangahao for the past six years. The district intends to mark its appreciation of Mr Dodson, and Mr and Mrs Hirst by entertaining them at a complimentary .social on Friday evening in the BSallanoe Hall, when it is hoped all friends of the family will assemble iu full force.

Harvesting operations ai'e in full swing here, and some splendid crops of oats are being got in, though the wheat grown is not in such good return as last year. Splendid weather is assisting the operations, and at the same time nil growing crops are looking very well. The harvesting of ttie grain has been done in all oases by Mr Chavtor, who has a full plant now—reaper and binder, chaffcutter, thrashing mill, and a big up to traction engine—so that settlers in this district are very fortunately situated in having at their door all the machinery required for saving the crops and preparing them tor the market. Fat lambs are also being sent away in large numbers, so the district is both busy and prosperous. What a contrast to the state of those unhappy countries devastated by war. \ 1 Dairy farmers who supply the j Tararup. Cheese Factory ar© easily distinguishable this week. Not only do thedr faces beam satisfaction, but their pockets bulge out with fat cheques they receive on pay day, for the directors paid out a bonus of 5d per lb of butter fat for the past six months!
