DISTRICT NOTES.

WOODVILLE

Miss K. Rhodes, of Woodville, has been awarded a senior national scholarship of £lO. Two more old Woodville boys have responded to the call of the Empire. They are Stanley ond Frederick Hughes, of Weraroa. Stanley is a member of Lord Liverpool’s Own. and Fired, of the Ninth. At the Woodville Borough Council meeting the Mayor, in discussing the Prime Minister’s letter regarding recruiting, said that it behoved them as councillors and members of the Patriotic Committee .to do all in their power to, fin tlier any scheme submitted by the Government, and it was the duty of councillors to make every effort, to attend Patriotic Society meetings and with presence and voice, do what they could to induce suitable men to answer the call of the Empire.

EKETAHTNA. Great dissatisfaction i<* expressed by settlers in the district at the prevalence of ragwort especially along the river bank. It is held, says an exdhange, that allowing ragwort to seed there is worse than out in the open, for while in the latter case tile re is a limit to the spread of the seed from a plant, in the former a whole, countryside may Be infected by the seeds being washed down stream. So strong is the feeling that an indignation meeting has been mooted. If matters are as reported, it is quite time the noxious weeds division of the Department made a move ond insisted on the weed being cleared. There was a great display df motor cars at the Pahiatua Show, says the Eketahuna paper, and the gate entrance of these must hare been a considerable source of revenue to the .Society. The horse and trap means of locomotion appears to be completely outclassed. even amongst the farming portion of the community, and apparently it will soon become as extinct as the dodo. X A disti not improvement is notice-1 able in Hamua of late. A number of timber mill relics in the sliape of the unsightly rough shacks have disappeared and have been replaced in cases by neat dwellings, doing away with the bush .settlement impresssion which was before given. There is an abundance of glass on farms along the road between Eketahuna and Pahiatua, and milkmg herds appear sleek and contented, a condition which no doubt is reflecting itself in the milk’pail. The decking on two of the bridges between Ekebahunn and Pahiatua is sadly in need of attention, particularly that on the bridge at Konini, which, judging by the sound on a motor passing over it. can contain very few effective bolts or nails. It is stated that quite a number of suppliers to Ni realm cheese factory have booked orders for milking next season. The directors of the Nlreaba cheese factory are considering the advisability of running the -factory through

the coming winter. A |>arty of Mastertonians who were returning from the Pahiatua show on Friday evening (reports the Age) hjad. an exciting appearance near Eketahuna. By some mischance, the car got out of hand, and tipped over an embankment. The escape of the oorupanfs was miraculous, the only injuries they sustained being abrasions. Phc oar, which was considerably knocked about, was recovered on Saturday. A successful swimming sports was held at Ekebahuna on Thursday last., the takings for the afternoon amounting to sl4.

The milk supply at the Niraaha chons** factory is now 3500 gallons. Mr S. Nilsson, of Eketahuna, haw purchased Mr* Fredrickson's freehold farm of 200 acres at Hbkanui. A sp<<aker at the Chamber of Commerce mooting mentioned that although there was reported tto be a shortage of mon the authorities appeared to bo somewhat lax. He cited the caws rtf a young man who bad onlifirted some time back. He was given a send-off and was quite ready to go, but though some of his mates who had enlisted at the same time had gone, this recruit had not yet boon called up—and whs still waiting.
