THE MONTHLY MEETING. TEe ordinary monthly meeting 6f tiie Pahia-tua. County Council was field 1 on Saturday morning. There were present: Messrs H. Cornelius (chairman), J. D. Mia.thews, B. J. Bengsten, G. H. Hodd, C. F. Gardner, A. Knox, and J. D. Piper.

It was resolved that the offer of Mr F. Woods of £2 rent per annum for a reserve be acccepted, subject ta certain conditions.

The Engineer was instructed to attend to a pump complaint by the County poundkeeper. Mr C. B. Cox made application for some old planks. It was decided to inform him that they are required for Council purposes. A request frcqp Mr Nevins in regard to a fence was left to the Engineer and riding member. On the motion of Cr. Mathews, it was decided that the road from Mr Eising’s homestead to the Bluff be repaired. Messrs Turner Bros., Pori, wrote requesting the grading of road near their property.—^Received. Mr F. Moor© wrotes resptcting the painting or tarring off the bridge over the Makuri River at the Gorge. He was prepared to contribute £7 10s towards the work. —Held over for the Engineer’s estimate. Mr H. Withers, Manga rama, applied to lease the metal reserve on the Kaitjawa road. The matter was held over until the return of the Chairman (Cr. Hod gins). THE ENGINEER’S REPORT. The report of th»> Engineer (Mr R. J. Dillon) was as follows: —

County Teams: The County teams were employed carting metal on to the roads during the month, two off them being engaged in the Konini district. Three on the Kaitawa Ridge Road, near Mt. Mai'chant, for the last three weeks, and two on the Central Road near the Mangatainoka Block. These latter teams having <xJtnpleted the repair of the roads on which they were engaged have gone out to .Mount Marehant and joined the teams already there. Should the weather hold up line in that locality a considerable quantity of metal should be put out during the coming month. Two of the teams lost a few days recently through the drivers leaving, hut everything is now working all right. The output of metal for the month was 1217 cubic yards, a rather poor tally (for this time of the year.

Progress of Contracts: The contract for the quarrying of 1300 yards of limestone ut Mt. is in progress, three men being engaged o*i the work, the stone is not turning out very well, there being a large quantity of fine sandy material mixed with it.

Contract No. 802: Supply of 2700 yards of shingle, Mangatainoka North Road, I). J. O’Sullivon, contractor, is proei-eding apace, and should be completed before the beginning of the wet weather.

Contract No. 800: Supply of metal Pah ia tua - Pongai'oa Road, J. C. Hunter, contractor, is nearing completion. Contracts No. 801 and -802, supply of limestone, Kaitawa Ridge Road, are being undertaken by the County Pams. A considerable amount of patching work to strengthen tlie road has already been done, and the coating of metal has l>een commenced on lx>th contracts. Prbtie{rftiv<ej "Work, MdFl&r Lane’s Bridge: A start has been made w ith the platting of the wire netting for stone groins authorised to l>c placed along the south bank of the river at MeFarlane’s bridge. A difficuly was experienced in procuring the necessary wire which has more than doubled itself in price. Enough now is on hand T think to complete the work. The boulder* hjnve been carted on to the site by tin, (Vanity teams.

Bridges, Mnkuri-Coonoor Road: Metal lias been carted up and a- start made with the concrete piers of the second small bridge on the Mukuri(Vionoor road, beyond Champions. With tin- line weather prevailing the work should not take long to complete. Bridge and Culvert at Ballunce: -\s soon as nnui are available a. start will bo made with the renewal of the large eulvert which lias washed out on the Valley road at Balia nee. The factory bridge repairs will also be put in band as early as possible. Rock Road: Some repairs are now being effected to the Rook road by a onuplo of tin' County teams, who will also cart the shingle for the cone-rote

| piers of the small bridge on the Makakahi bridge near Burns’ property. Surfacemen: Applications are beirig invited for two surfacemen to fiU the vacancies now existing at Makairo and Makomako. Possibly good reliable men will be difficult to obtain.

Tarring Work: I am in hopes of having the tarring of the Scarborough footpath put in hand as soon as the boiler can be borrowed from the Borough Council. The tarring and sanding of the Mangatadnoka bridge deck will be carried out at the same time.

Repair of Various Bridges: The decking of the suspension bridge over the Mangatamoka river on the Pukawhai road is showing signs of decay, and I harp sent out some timber tO| replace the rotten planks. Timber has been ordered for Verry’s- bridge on the South road, near Tutaekara. Traffic planks are being placed on a small bridge on'the Man gar am a road. The decking of a couple of other bridges on the same road are in need of attention. Repairs will be effected to the sheading of Hull’s bridge, Kohinui, as soon as a man is available.
