PONGAROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent). A picnic was held at Kaituma on Wednesday, on Mr A. C. Herbert’s property in aid of the Waihi Queen candidate. There was a large attendance, including a number from Potngaroa. Miss D. Holdem, the Waibi candidate, and Miss A. Burling ,'the Pongaroa candidate, were present. The cals© presented by Mr F. Armstrong, which had already been auctionel at Akitio, Pongaroa and Rakammi for £IOB, was again auctioned during the day and brought in the' lonesome sum of £52 10s, making the total realised for the cake £155 10s. I believe it is to be put up again before being finally disposed of. Tile flag taken round by Messrs W. Pickett, and party also brought in a considerable sum. A danc© was held in the evening, when a number of gifts were auctioned 1 . A guinea pig was sold for about £2. j Several raffles were got off during the evening, and dancing was kept up till the small hours of the morning. I understand that as a result off thle picnic the fund will be augmented by about £l5O. At the stock sale on Thursday, the buggy presented to the No. 1 candidate was put up for auction and brought the sum of £42. At a meeting of the Woodvdle A. and P .Association the president (Mr W. H. Gaisford) briefly gave a statement of the final return of the Show. Result ef the first gate, £2lV?s; second gate, £36 14s 6d; lawn, £2l 2s 6d; boundary rider collected 14s 6d; total £7B 13s 6d. The receipts are estimated to total approximately £709 10s 3d, estimated liabilities £385. Credit balance £324 10s 2d, less £172 10s 3d balance forward, leaving an estimated balance ‘of £152 for Wounded Solliers’ Fund. .This did not include the ladies’ catering. The President stated that the result was tlje finest in the Association’s history. He also commented oulogistically on the catering, and moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for the excellent way in which they attended to the catering. This was passed unanimously. Mr W. Cross, of Alfred ton, a highly respected settler of 46 years’ standing, has decided to retire, and has handed over the management of his .farm to Mr Louis Cross. Mr Cross intends to spend a vacation in Wellington, and may possibly settle there.
