PAHIATUA DISTRICT RECRUITS.

PATRIOTIC DEMONSTRATION.

YESTERDAY > SEND-OFF.

Tlio biggest squad, of recruits that has yet left Paliiatua. at one time took their departure for Trentkam Camp yeserday afternoon. The recruits numbered about two dozen, aitu at the fetation they were supplemented by several others from M a ngatainoka anti iWoodville. After lunch at the Commercial Hotel, they were paraded at the flagstaff. There addresses were delivered by the Mayor (Mr J. D. C. Crewe), Mr G. H. Smith (chairman of the Paliiatua District Recruiting Committee), .Mi' H. Cornelius (exchairman of the Paliiatua County Couutjil) an dlneut.-Colonel Herinon. Eacli\speaker concluded with an ex,pres>iiof good luck and a sate and speedy return for the men. Each also called for three cheers for the recruits and these were heartily responded to. Oil behalf of the citizens, the Mayor offered good wishes to the men, and assured them that the same interest would be manifested in them as in •their predecessors. He believed that they would give just as good an account of themselves as those who had gone before them. The war had at present a very serious reflection, but the position might be considerably altered in a month’s time. He repeated that the men leaving that day would make the same gallant stand, if tneed he. as their comrades now in the trenches. (Applause),

Mr Smith said he understood from Staff-Sergeant Major Allen that every man who had enlisted in this district had answered the call. (Hear, hear). He thought this was a feather in the cap of Paliiatua, as lie noticed that in Wellington 70 men were missing when their names were called. The men would occupy a place in the heart of the nation that they could not occupy without joining the volunteer force. He wished the men the very best of luck, and should they return they would he given the time of their lives. (Hear, hear). All would, without exception, join in the welcome home. (Applause). Mr Cornelius, speaking in the absence of the County Chairman (Mr T. Hixlgins) said that all living in the Paliiatua County were proud of the men going forth to-day. No man was worthy of the name of a man if lie did not assist to conquer the enemy, and it behoved all throughout the British Empire to do his or her part in the present great struggle. If he was twenty years younger he would go liimseif. As all old volunteer he advised the men not u> be foolhardy or take unnecessary risks. Lieut.-Colonel Hermon said it was with mixed feelings they had met that day. and lie alluded to the tine quality of the men who were going forth

to do their duty and to rally round ■die flag. (Hear, hear). That day was a great day amongst them, as they were sending away the largest contingent that had yet left Paliiatua. Ht counselled the men to fear God and honour the King. On the call of Private R. McFarlane. the recruits gave three cheers for tin Paliiatua citizens, and another cheer was given for Private R. McEarlaiie.

A procession of motor cars, many ox them gay w ith flags was then formed. and after going round the town, proceeded to the station, where a large number of people congregated, and there was considerable cheering as *lie expre-s bearing the recruits steamed out.
