FATALITY IN PAHIATUA.
LITTLE GIRL KILLED. A DISTRESSING CASE. A very distressing accident, occurred in Pahiatua on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death or Doris Mahora Boyens, between 7 and 8 years of age, youngest chili ot Mr and Mis Mm. H. Boyens. of Sedoole street. Shortly before 5 p.in. on Sort m nrday deceased's youngest broth tit Ivan Cecil, was riding a pony aUJf SedooLe street, the animal beiongniy to a lad named Rohr, employed by Mr J. Breeds, of Ngaturi. The little girl asked him for a ride, and he got off, put her on and commenced to lead the horse. Something suddenly startled the animal which pulled the reins out of Hie boy’s bawl and careered along trie street. The boy called out to his sister to jump oft . and she made an attempt to do but apparently frightened the Ijoisv more. The girl got hung in the stirrup leather, and the pony, which galloped along the footpath with t-lie girl in this perilous position, afterwards cleared the watercourse. The girl seemed to swing under the horse's belly ,a.s the latter jumped the watercourse, and then she swung out again with her head downwards. She eventually got clear ot the stirrup leather, and fell in front of the horse'.foet, the animal galloping right over the top of her. The pony went on for a few yards further, being brought to a standstill by a youth named Pat Moynihan. When* Dr. Paterson arrived on the scene shortly after five the girl was lying on the grae> at the side of the road near Mr Lames’ residence at the corner of Sedoole and Wakeman streets. She u an unconscious state, and died on the ' way to her parents' residence, about 100 yards distant. The deceased had a large scalp wound and slacking injuries about the body. The doctor stated that deatli was due to fracture of the base of the skull. An inquest was held at the Court--1 louse .yesterday afternoon. t>eiore Mr E. J. Gotliard, District Coroner. Dr. Paterson. Ivan Boyens, and Janies Kelly (a stable employee), gave evidence bearing out the above facte. Constable Burrell said there was nothing to show what frightened the pony, but in his opinion the girl's clothes was the cause. A verdict of accidentally k .led was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. i'he tragic occurrence ban evoked numerous expressions of svmpathy Jrom all over the district t •• bereaved parents and family. Tie deceased was a winsome little g and greatly liked by all who knew her Ihe funeral will take plac- to-mor-row (luesday) afternoon.
