FREIGHT CHARGES.

PREFERENCE TO NEW 5 ZEALAND Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington. Last Night. The New Zealand and African Steamship Company have received advice by cable from London stating that the British Government has fixed the rate of freight on beef and mutton from South America to London at Jd j>er lb. It is interesting to note that the present rates from New Zealand are id per lb on beef and nine-sixteenths of a penny oui mutton, although the meat has to be carried twice as far in the case of New Zealand. Even if the suggested war sur-tax of 25 per cent, on freigths were imposed the rates from New Zealand would still be lower than those from South America to Britain.
