STRANGLES AT AWAPUNI. (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) Wellington, This Day. An outbreak of strangles lias occurred among the horses at the camp at Palmerston North. This afternoon Mr G. Hunter (Waipawa), asked the Minister for Defence whether he was aware of it and whether effective measures wore being taken to prevent the spread of the disease? The Hon. J. Allen said he haa hoard unofficially that strangles had broken out in the camp at Awapuni, and he had instituted enquiries, hut had not yet received replies. Mr Witty: Are the sick horses bo ing isolated? Mr Allen: I know that at tho camp in Canterbury when strangles broke out tho horses were isolated at once. Mr Hunter: It is very necessary that such stejis should he taken because if not tho disease will go right through the camp and the result will be that when the horses arrive at Home they will be absolutely unfit for work, Mr Allen said that he was sure Hint all necessary precautionary measures would bo taken. Later in the afternoon tho Minister said that he had received a report from tho Director of Remounts to tho offivt that the most effective measures wore bo ing taken to cope with the on three it and that the latest information was that the trouble was decreasing
