PUBLICE WORKS.

i i i > I.lv, vrrvxxo. (To the Editor.) Sir, — My attention lias been drawn to n list of Government subsidies which you published under the above beading in your issue of Saturday last. Unfortunately, as far as the Pahiatiia County is concerned, your list is quite inaccurate and misleading. as a number of the items mentioned (at least six) have been dealt with a year or so ago. while others are in the hands of the Public Works Department itself, leaving only a few which are from time to time being offered to the- County Council, usually under some impossible conditions. As an example of the “assistance” which The. Pahiatua County Council is at present receiving from the Public Works Department I may mention that with the exception of the £250 for Tylee's Bridge .not one penny of Government subsidy was available for expenditure this year on the main road between Pahiatua and the. Akitio boundary beyond Makuri. The whole of the metalling and other work recently done on that road has been paid for out of rates. —I am, etc., R. J. DILLON. Engineer Pahiatua County Council, May sth, 1914. (If the list is inaccurate and misleading, as claimed, the official responsible. for its compilation is to blame. The amounts as printed wore, included in a. Government publication recently issued, giving a list of subsidies for all parts of the Dominion. —Ed. P.H.)
