PAST YEAR’S WORK. THE ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report of the Pahiatua District High School Committee to he submitted to the annual meeting of householders to-mor-row evening:—“A large amount of work has been done to the entrance of the school by the erection of a boulder wall, some 111 feet in length, and iron gates, the construction of concrete channelling and kerbing and groiyid improvements, also tho usual digging and maintenance, at a total cost of £lO2 12s 2d. A special word of praise is due to the headmaster and staff for the enthusiasm shown in assisting the committee in carrying out the above work. also to Mr Wm. Wakeman, who gave several days gratuitiously at the erection of the boulder wall. The Pahiatua Borough Council donated the sum of £5 towards the wall, and the committee desire to thank the Council. The Ixiulder wall is ail ornament to the school grounds as well as to the town, in addition to covering up an eyesore and preventing the footpath from being blocked by slips. Tho committee also desire to thank parents and residents for the generous manner in which they have helped to raise funds for carrying out the work of the school, which insulted in a satisfactory financial position at the end of the financial year ended February 28th, the credit balance then being £6 17s 6d. The total receipts were £179 18s sd. In July last a children’s fancy dress carnival was held, and it. netted £1.3 7s. The school sports and garden fete were held in February and netted £l4. Although the weather was unfavourable and militated against the attendance, the result must be regarded as satisfactory. The total raised by local effort was £27 7s, which carried with it a Government subsidy of £ for £. The footpath leading to the school has been recently asphalted by the Borough Council in response to the request made by the School Committee. The inspectors and members of the Wellington Education Board visiting the school have referred to the work of the committee and school generally in very complimentary terms. The following pupils were successful at recent examinations: Doris McCardle gained a senior scholarship, Mabel Herd qualified for a senior scholarship, Albert Astle. Hector Geange and Ernest Seddole passed the Public Service examination, and George Clifton qualified for a senior scholarship. We would he wanting in gratitude did we not express our keen appreciation of the tact and ability of the headmaster (Mr J. Thomas) and staff during our term of office. ’Hie success of the pupils at the recent examination is gratifying. Mrs BakerGabb’s successor, Miss Reese, was apIKiinted in April, 1913, Miss Stormont, who left to ho married, was succeeded by Miss Ritchie, os infant mistress. Miss O’Meara and Miss Nathan were appointed during the year. Mr Stevenson, assistant Agricultural Instructor. was appointed visiting science master at the beginning of the year. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn has visited the school recently as medical inspector.”
