The Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1913. THE TOWN SQUARES.

Tlie executive of the Pahiatua District Progressive Association, in its efforts to raise funds for the doing up of the town squares, deserves the heartiest support of town and country residents. Largely as a result of the Association’s efforts the squares opposite Messrs A. H. Herbert and Oo.’s store and the Herald Office are now wearing a much improved appearance, hut there still remains much to he done in the direction of planting and asphalting, and it is with a view to I completing those works that the Asso- : ciation is now endeavouring to raise further capital. It proposes tq do this by holding a grand concert in the Foresters Hall on Monday evening, and it is to he hoped that the function will prove the success it deserves to he. The programme to be submitted is a really good one, while the object is one that the people of the town and district should not fail to support. If ever people should lie proud of their | town the people of Pahiatua should i surely be proud of theirs. There is not ! an outsider who visits the place who ■ is not pleased with it, for there are I few towns of the same sine in New Zea- : land where there can be found ns fine a main street, with its well-planted squares, and so many municipal advantages in the way of good roadways ; and footpaths, well-lighted streets, I drainage and water supply, municipal swimming baths, etc. There are not I those wanting, indeod, who say that ! Pahiatua is the best laid out little town in New Zealand. 'Hiis, perhaps, may be somewhat of an exaggeration, but if it is there can he no. disputing

the fact that Pahiatua as a town will compare very favourably with any town of a corresponding size in the Dominion. It is well that we should recognise this and be proud of the fact, and in being proud of it do what we can to always make our town attractive and fair to look upon. The Progressive Association is certainly going upon right lines when it advocates the beautifying of the town, and in this, we feel sure, the Association will be supported by town and country residents. When the town squares mentioned are completed it will become necessary to do up the remaining square next the Post Office, but it is not proposed to do anything to this square until next year. After the squares are completed the Association proposes to plant the road in from the station right up to the District High School, a distance of two miles, with trees, so it will be seen that it has a programme for several years mapped out. More power to them.
