Tlio O’Brienito Nationalists (twelve in number) believing that the Hon. H. Samuel’s amendments to clause fifteen of the Home Rule Bill have destroyed the last vestige of national self-government in Ireland, have resolved to abstain from discussing tho financial clauses.

Mr Samuel, in speaking on clause 15 of the Home Rule Bill in the House of Commons, said the proposal to enable Ireland to reduce the Customs duties was not vital, but as a Large number of Liberals objected to it, the Government thought fit to meet them. Air Austen Chamberlain asked the Government to justify the principle which allowed tho Irish Parliament to vary the super-tax, and to alter conditions as to exemption and abatements of income tax, hut prohibited the varying of the rates of the tax. Mr Lough (Liberal) and Alurray AlacDonald (Liberal) also expressed dissatisfaction with the Government’s decision. Air Hayes Fischer’s amendment was rejected by 284 votes to 167. The by-election for the Bow and Bromley seat caused by Air Lansbury resigning to re-contest tho seat on the women’s suffrage question, resulted: Blair (Unionist) 4042 votes. Lansbury (Liberal) 3291. The suffragettes conducted an activo campaign on behalf of Air Lansbury, but the contest was not confined to the franchise question. Aggrieved workers complained of the Insurance Act, and Air Lansbury suggested that it should be repealed. Many Liberals and Labourites abstained from voting.
