DRINK AND CRIME.
CHIEF JUSTICE’S VIEWS
Electric Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, This Day.
At the Supreme Court to-day Frank Roberts, charged with stealing a quantity of leather, was granted probation for twelve months and ordered to pay costs.
Cecil Braithwaite, charged with the theft of three diamond rings, was ordered to be sent to Roto Roa for twelve months. Accused’s counsel said that drink was the cause of the trouble.
“So long as we have drinking customs this sort of thing is bound to occur,” said the Chief Justice. “I am not over-rating the facts when I sav that a third of the cases at the criminal sessions are due to drink. Sometimes the proportion is twothirds.”
