An elderly woman unified Anna Horsnoll, a resident ot Sydenham, Christchurch, slipped ami 101 l while alighting from a tram car at Oneliunga this evening, suffering fracture of the skull. Death resulted several hours later. The deceased was on a visit to her daughter and had intended returning to Christchurch to-morrow.
Feildiug. June 11. The case in which W. Clarkson sued Adrian Porter tor £IOO on a promissory note as part payment of a n. tor car was concluded last night. The defence was that defendant was drunk when lie signed the hill and was therefore not ivsivonsible. After a lengthy hearing the Magistrate decided that. Porter was not drunk, and gave judgment for plaintiff.
Christchurch. June 11. The Licensing Committee granted 44 renewals, but belli over two.
The Srlwyn Licensing Committee had an application before it ter an hotel license at Mt. Somers, hut tin’ application was refused. Mt. Somers was a portion of the Ashburton torato during lio-license there, hut in the last readjustment it was included in the Selwyn electorate. The Committee felt that they had no power to increase the number of licenses m Selwyn. Ashburton, June 11. At a meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day applications ivcei received for the licenses of six hotels in Geraldine, Orari, Rangitata, and Arundel, which had come into the Ashburton electorate by the alteration of boundaries. Die committee held that under' sections 8 and 38 of the Licensing Act, rend together, they had no power to grant the licenses.
