AKITIO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Cham- j hers, Pongaroa, on Saturday, 27th j inst. Present: Crs. W. A. Burling (chairman), Armstrong, Gillam, Buch and Murray. A memo, was read from the Pay- < master-General stating that the sum of £235 4s 9d was placed to the credit lof the Council as subsidy £1 for £1 | j for metalling the Makuri and Pongaroa road.—Received. From Valuer-General, fnclosing form of declaration to be signed Ly j 'the chairman of the Council, and asking for copy of re-valuation levying the general rate, also copy of balancesheet for year 1906-7.—This has been attended to. From the Public Health Department as to a meeting at Masterton on 17th July. Recei v ed. Cr. Gillam here called the attention of the Council to the abominable condition of the various reserves within the village settlement. These reserves tseem to be considered the dumping ground for all sorts of filth. The indiscriminate felling of trees and shrubs .on the river reserves ought to be prevented, otherwise any bush for scenic purposes here would soon be a tiling of the past. From the Department of Public Health, Napier, as to disinfecting the premises, bedding, clothes, etc., in connection with a fatal case of infectious disease at Akitio, namely. that of Mrs Miles from blood poisoning. From Mr Sidney H. Ryan, medical attendant, certifying to the above case. R ecei ved. From the County Clerk, Weber, asking for £1 2s 6d, being half the cost of making a track on Mcl.eod’s road, so as to have access 'to ‘his sections. Agreed to. From C. Macdonald, asking for remuneration for clearing slip near Kayser’s on the Alfredt on-Weber road -Mr Mcdonald to be notified: That, the Council under the circumstances regrets its inability to pay for unauthorised work. From Mr R. B. Ross. M.H.R.. as to application for £BOOO loan.—The chairman stated that Mr Ross had been notified as to what sums were to he expended on the various toads, and that the contracts for £IBOO to he expended on the Pongaroa-Makuri-road were already let. From Mr W. P. James, S.M.. asking for information as to a suitable building for holding quarterly sittings of the Magistrate’s Court, at Pongaroa. On the motion of Cr Gillam, seconded by Cr. Murray, it was resolved : That the use of the council room he granted for the purpose indicated on condition that the room he cleaned up after each sitting.” From Mr N. Mcllobie tendering his resignation as representative of the Council on the Board of Management of the Technical School. Pahiatua. Cr. Murray proposed: “That Mr W. Tosswili be appointed to succeed Mr Mcllobie. This was seconded hy Cr Burling and carried. From the Government Insurance Department reminding the Council that their policy expires on the Ist August. 11)07. Received. I From the. Bank of New Zealand. jPahiatua, stating that the Council's j overdraft has been granted. Receivi ed. From Mr I). Kelicher asking for I consideration on contract owing to | severe loss hy floods and slips, etc., j after contract was finished and ready ito he passed by the overseer. During | the discussion it transpired that Mr j Kelicher had made good all the damage done by flood, etc., and had comj plated his contract according to specijfieations. Cr. Burling moved: “That in consideration of the contract being | well finished ns well as the damage done by floods being repaired, Mr Kelicher he paid £25 for extra work done.'' This was seconded hy Cr. Gillam and carried. A number of settlers applied to have their accrued thirds expended on tin* Iluia-road. Rukaunui, which was in a very had state. On the motion of Cr. Gillam. seconded hy Cr. Burling, it was resolved: That as soon as the “thirds” came to hand the work suggested be gone on with. The intimated that the “thirds” accruing to two parties (Dunn and Styles) were not available for this work.

Air W. H. Hunter wrote as to the , had state of the road from Pongaroa to Akitio. From Mr T. Harris, dog tax col- 1 lector, enclosing list of settlers who have not registered their dogs.—Held over. Cr. Gillam moved that fresh applications be called for the position of County Ranger, seconded by Cr Mur- | ray and carried. A memo, was read from Air F. G. Moore as to printing for the Council. 1 Mr Aloore to be asked to give quota- j tions of prices. | A petition was received from nine j ■ settlers in the Waione district as to the wash-out at Bishop’s creek, sug--1 gesting the erection of a bridge and i a culvert to be placed at Berry’s old I wliare.—Cr. Gillam proposed : That the settlers be informed that ths-ir suggestion will be carried out when--1 ever the “thirds” are available. This was seconded by Cr. Burling and car- ' ried. Cr Gillam moved to the effect: ( That the action of the chairman regarding the Akitio Valley-road he approved of and the Council’s thanks be accorded to him tor his trouble in interviewing the Roads Department and his services in other respects, j while in Wellington.—This was seconded hy Cr. Murray and carried. | The tender ot Air J. H. Berry, of £3O, for repairs to road (10 chains) near Kaituna. was accepted, j Messrs AlacKay and Blair interviewed the Council as to the state of the Waihoki-road.—lt transpired that it was practically impossible to get up to the ferry at Akitio. and to take teams or drays down was out of the question. Protective works against the action of the river and heavy sea-wash are necessary. Cr. Burling moved: That the Overseer be instructed to open up the road from the old homestead to Akitio, employing four men, and to exercise his judgment in getting feed from the Coast. This was seconded by Cr. Armstrong and carried.—Cr. Armstrong said he would give the use of two horses to help the work. With regard to protective works, it was left to the Overseer to arrange for work to he done by the settlers tlnere at the ferry, to alio w tor wheel jtraffic. i Cr. Gillam gave notice of motion, That another team of horses with necessary accoutrements be procured, : when funds are available, in order to cope with the work. Copies were received of the following Bills to be laid before Parliament, namely, (T) “Abolition of Plural Voting in County Councils, (2) “Lights on Vehicles Act.” (3) “LocaT Bodies Loan Act Amendment Act.”—On the motion of Cr. Murray, seconded by Cr. Burling it was resolved: That Air i Ross. M.H.R., he written to asking him to vote against Air Hogg's Bill for the abolition of plural voting in County Councils. I Cr. Gillam gave notice of motion: That a separate rate of I Jd per £. be struck over the various ridings of the County. ) The Overseer in his report said that the bridge near Alalmanclie’s had been repaired, and a culvert 40 feet long terton boundary in place of the broken terton boundary in place of broken one. The Alakuri-Pongaroa-road near Cross-road lias been attended to, also big slip on Pongaroa-Aohanga-road i between Pongaroa and the old homestead. The Akitio river-road had been put in order for horse and saddle traffic. Towai-road had been attended to. A wash-out had occurred rear Mr Davidson’s house, owing to broken culvert. A culvert had also broken on Range-load, which could not he repaired yet. owing to shortness of timber. There are several wash-outs on the Huia and Waikereru-roads, and the aproaches to Tikaramanga bridge are being damaged This is being attended to. One of the teams is working on the Ilium-road, and the other on the Makuri-Pongaroa-j road. All the c ounty roads are in a very had state at present.
