THE RECKLESS MOTORIST

Complaints have often of late been levelled against the motorist who seems to be possessed .of the idea that the road is his own private property. But rarely has there been such good cause for complaint as there was in a case brought before the Automobile Association recently by Dr Mason. Dr Mason stated that on July 24th, lie had an accident with his car at the-Huff. With the assistance of a car-load of sympathising motorists, lie had just got his car on all fours, and was proceeding to effect temporary repairs to the front axle, in order to allow the car to he dragged into a neighbouring farmyard, when a car came in sight, travelling at the rate of forty miles an hour. The usual signals were made to the approaching chaffeur, and although he had ten chains in which to draw up. lie still drove on, with the result that he dashed into the disabled car. stripping off the mudguard and step, and throwing those working on it aside, inflicting injury on several of them. And then, to make matters worse, lie began to abuse the owners of the disabled car as the cause of the incident. Dr. Mason gave the name of the chaffeur. and the number of his ear. in the hope that something would be done in the way of punishment. The registration of drivers, as well as of cars, was advocated as a means of preventing such happenings in the future. Tt is certain that something must he done soon to put a stop to practices such as these, which are becoming too frequent- on “our roads.
