New Zealand beef unchanged. River Plate sheep, heavy, 3|d; do., light, 3gd. New Zealand hemp is hardening, and is now firm. At the wool sales there is keener competition for crossbreds and more spirited demand for merinos. Prices are in sellers’ favour. The following were the average prices realised for the following clips: BW, Oliau, 9§d ; Waiau, 10Jd ; Kaputone, 20d; Kaimatai. 12 jd: Hiku. 12d. The number of bales catalogued to date is 137,223: sold. 122.411.
' HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. | The following is the High Commissioner's cable, dated London, 20tli July:—Mutton market firm. Stock on hand light and firmly held in a row hands. Canterbury mutton 4gd; North Island 4d. Lam!) market firm. Good demand for all classes. Stocks .on hand moderate. Canterbury lamb, s£d: and other than Canterbury sfd. Beef market quiet, but firm at 3jd per lb for hind and fore quarters respectively. Supplies of American chilled beef on hand are small. Butter market quiet, but steady. The prospects for this commodity tor next season are doubtful at present. Everyone is inclined to hold back as long as possible, thereby forcing the market price down. Choicest New Zealand 995. Danish 109 s. Siberian 925, Irish 100 s per cwt. Large supplies coming forward. Cheese market steady. Good demand experienced. Canadian supplies likely to increase. New Zealand, 61s: Canadian, white, 575; and coloured. 58s. Hemp market quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. Reports from Manila ’indicate that heavy shipments are expected from there Good fair grade, on spot, £35 Us; fair grade, £3O 10s: Jitlv-September shipments, good. fair. £34 10s: fair, £3O: fair, current Manila, on spot, £36. Cocksfoot seed market firm. Buyer'. however., have been offering more freely, and bright 171 b seed i> quoted at 56s per cwt.
