A STORMY PASSAGE.
SCHOONER’S ROUGH EXPERIENCES. CAPTAIN AND MATE INCAPACITATED. PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, May 28. With torn sails, bulwarks broken and showing big gaping holes, the the captain ill and the mate disabled. the schooner Joseph Sims arrived at Lyttelton this afternoon, after a terrible passage of eight davs from Havelock. For four days the vessel was battling in the same heavy southerly gale along the coast which caused the Tarawera to take thirty-two hours on the passage front Wellington to Lyttelton. During the worst of the gale the schooner drifted tor -ixty hours, with the skipper lying deliriously ill in his hunk, and the mate disabled by a fearful gash on the head, after being thrown against a bulwark by a huge w ave which ernsned on board la«t Tuesday. The mate was semi-conscious with the wound, when the captain rose front liis sick bed to dress the injury. and staggered on dock to take charge of tin* vessel. Captain Malian, formerly ol the big sailing vessel Fall' oi (tarry, has tor about twelve months been in command ot the schooner Joseph Sims. >1 tons, trading trom Lyttelton to Wellington. Pnponga and Westport, and the Sounds. The Joseph Sims during that period has encountered several heavy gales on the coast, hut through skiltul handling has managed to escape accident. The schooner has onlv recently entered the Lyttelton--11 a velock trade to till the vacancy caused by the disaster to the schooner Ronga. The Josopll Stills has occupied eight days in covering about 230 miles.
