ADDRESS BY THE GOVERNMENT EXPERTS.

MESSRS. GILRUTH AND KIN SELLA.

I poll the conference resuming after the luncheon adjournment yesterday Me."i>. Gilruth, chief veterinarian, and Kinsella, dairy commissioner, were present and delivered addresses to probably the largest aiilienee of farmers ever seen in Pahiatua. Mr. Gilruth gave an excellent address, his subject being “Parasites in Sheep.' He was accorded a patient hearing, and at the conclusion of his remarks was asked several questions, which lie answered in a most satisfactory manner. Mr. Kinsella followed Mr. Gilruth. and prefaced his remarks by saying that it afforded him great pleasure to be present at the conference. On looking over the order paper he was surprised to find nothing on it relating to his department. He thought it rather strange that at such a large and representative gathering of farmers there should be nothing on the order paper with regard to the dairying industry. It there had been a motion carried by such a gathering of farmers in reference to the establishing of an experimental dairy station in some centre by the Government, it would have considerably strengthened • the iiands of Mr. Gilruth and himsell. who were handicapped owing to the want of an institution of that kind. The dairying industry was one that deserved attention. During his recent visit to Denmark and America, lie was convinced that New Zealand would have to make a move in the direction of getting cheaper production. There were about 150,000 milk suppliers in the colony, which repiaseuted about L2.972.59i for butter ant cheese and there were also the by-pro ducts. There were poultry and other stock produced on the farms, and from which revenue was raised. Two and a halt million pounds were raised from the cows annually. They would fie surprised when he told them that by individual testing n< had found a farmer who was milking a cow fourteen times a week for twenty-eight weeks, and which cow had only yielded three 'hillings anti sixpt net- [*t-r week. Through having co.vs of that description in a herd, the average test of the nerd was f.oir-iderabiy reduced. ho had been advocating the Hahcock testing system, and hoped to lie abb to assist the farmers in bringing about a thorough testing system, lhe introduction oi the grading system and the methods of ripening cream had done a great deal in the production of their butter. While in Canada he had visit'd the Slat" farm and was surprised at the progress that i -tahlishruent. Mr. Kinsella gave an instance of the method- 1 a l--1 opted in connection with seeds on ' those farms. Samples of various kinds of seeds were sent out to about “■ >< I.'i 1 at farrne: - for them to experiment with. He contend'd that the met hods could be adopt'd in \ .. /. aland, and a great deal could i„ done with regard to the lessening ot the cost, of production. Apart I rorn the question 'it the -elect 1071 ot ~yil ;he Canadian Government had adopted means for encouraging the farmers to visit the State farms, so that they can see what was being done. Nu l< - than 12.000 farmers vi-ited a State farm in the northi tof America last year. I lie question of e.-tabli hilig experimental stnot < on-id.-i able importance ■,, • e farmers of New Zealand, i : '■ < would he able to see how everything uas done and practical demonstrations go further among the farmers and In them more good than tiny would derive from all the hooks in the country. Mi Stubbs said that the Palmerston North branch ol the I nion was prepared to hand over 45 acres of firstclass land for the purijose of establishing an experimental farm in that centre. He would like to know from Air. Kinsella where he eon-idere'l it would In- most suitable to establish an experimental farm. Mr. Kinsella Said it would not matter much whete the farm was established He thought it liould In e-tahlislied in New Zealand. (Laughter). After several questions had been a-ked and answered by Mr. Kinsella. voles of thanks were accord's I Messrs Gilruth and Kinsella for their a I le addresses.
