woman who gets without giving. His or her opposite is the man or woman who gives without getting. Not that the gambler is sordid or mean. He is not necessarily that. As an amateur certainly not. As a professional, however, he is not popular, even now. What binds society together is the willingness of its members to do, give, bear their share, more rather than less, of the work, wealth or suffering of the community. The gamester (or stress) is doing less rather than more. A disintegrating element. Ho, no doubt, are many others. But that is beside the point. We are not speaking now of loafers, or drunkards, or burglars, or even millionaires, but of the gambler only. That others are also disintegrating society does not absolve him. On this count he will, sooner or later, he tried, convicted, sentenced and knuckl'd on the head. He may he foolish, immoral and rascally bad into the bargain. But these counts cannot always be proved against him. No plea be can make will avail against the charge that be is an anti-social being. 1 am. etc., H. Al. B. AIARSHALL. Alangatainoka, Alay 27, 1906.
