AUSTRALIA v. MANAWATU. VICTORY FOR THE VISITORS. Pisa Press Association. Palmerston North, Sept. G. The Australian team defeated the Mauawatu and Hawke’s Bay combined team to-day by seven points (an unconverted try and a goal from a mark) to five (a converted try). On the whole, the game as in favour of the Australians, who apparently found the dry ground and perfect weather conditions to their liking. Their forwards were clean and clever in foot work, and the backs seldom made mistakes, and handled the ball very prettily. For the visitors Wickham kicked the goal from a mark by Oxley, taken near the half-way line, and McLean scored the try. For Mauawatu McNae scored and Ward converted. Between five and six thousand people were present at the match. WELLINGTON v. SOUTHLAND.
Invercargill, Sept t. The Wellington v. South' rad match, played to-day, ended, after a fast game, in a draw, each side searing six points. In the first spell Collerton scored a try for Wellington, and G. Spencer kicked a penalty goal. In the second half for Southland, Hughes got a try at the start, and just on the call of time Grace secured another, which should have been converted. The teams were equal in weight, but the visitors were faster than their opponents.
BUSH v. WAIRARAPA THURSDAY JUNIORS. At Mastertpn yesterday the Bush juniors suffered defeat at the hands of the Wairarapa Thursday juniors by 12 fioints to 6. The game was not by any means a brilliant exposition of football, but the Wairarapa forwards played well. Tow .rds the end of the first spell Baker scored for the Bush, but the trv w - not converted. <hi resuming the Bush attacked, Bentley, Sw Connor, Singleton and Meade doing good work. The Wairarapa attacks were spoiled 1 ■ bad play on the part of the Hicks. A speculative kick by a Bush player gave the ball to McKinnon under the goal posts, and. goal. I lie Waiiv! in. players revelled several Bush nr. and tin .i McKenzie's height eiiaoied him to secure the ball from a line out aid lie scored behind the posts. McKenzie added the extra p oints. Connor headed a Bush rush and eventually scored in the corner, the kick at goal being a failure. McKenzie again scored under the posts from a line out, but the try was not converted. For the Bush team Bentley was the pick of the backs, whilst P. Hare. Swiggs. Connor. Singleton, Futcher, Douglas arid Meade also played well.
