Reuter’s states that Alberts and Ko-s, two Botlias, and some Traosvaalers, totalling seven hundred, attempted to cross the Byngs and Kimington, Vrede, and Bothasberg line to the Northwards. The brunt of tbe fighting fell on Garratt’s Zealanders who by superb valour defeated the attempt but lost two officers eighteen men killed five officers, and thirty three wounded. The Boers abandoned a hundred hor-, s and six thousand cattle. The Boi rs first goaded a bead of cattle to a gallop, but the New Zealanders . hot seventy which had the effect of checking all tbe rest. F'rorn behind tbe cover ef dead cattle and hor es the Boers maintained a Inavy lire till repulsed, and a few escaped. llans Botha and Main Botha were among it the most determined fighters.
