The Minister of Lands returned to Wellington yesterday from a visit to (Hugo and Southland.
The Reman Catholic Carnival at Mu torton was opened lai-t night by Archbishop Redwood. There was a ' very large gathering of the public, and tho greatest enthusiasm pm vailed. The musical portion of the carnival has been organised by Signor Ror/oni. It is to bo continued throughout the week.
Mr T. M.Grant, of tho head office of the I lands anil Survey Department has been promoted to the position of chief draughtsman in tho Survey Office at Hokitika, in the place of Mr 0 .1. Roberts, who about two months i ago was made Chief Hurvoyor and 1 Commissioner far Crown Lands al 1 WtJ’.laud.
