Newman.

The combined miikmen’s and school-children’s picnic came off on Thursday at Mr Berg’s ground, Central Mangaone road. Notwithstanding the unpromising appearance of the weather in the morning, and counter attractions—notably the Alfredton races and the opening of the Weslevau manse at Eketahuna—the attendance came up to full expectations, there being about 300 preseut. The committee one and all worked hard to make it a success, and succeeded in doing so. There were numerous prizes, including i'l Is Dairy Union prize, stockwhip, cartwhm, wheelbarrow, set of shoes, set of fire-dogs, milk-strainer, 10s for sawing and chopping competition, and lots of toys for the children. Everything passed off first rate and gave general satisfaction. In the evening a dauce was held in the Newman Hall and this also proved a great success, the ladies contributing in every wav to make it successful. Any surplus over actual expenses will bo donated towards children's prises for the school. Miss Arnold, from Masterton, has been appointed as mistress of the Newman school and bids fair to become very popular.
