Dairying Industry.
Per Press Association. Palmerston, July 24. The annual meeting ot the National Dairy Association was comm< need to day. The president, speaking on the report and balancesheet, said the association’s affairs were in a flourishing condition. The membership was now 68, as against 48 last year. The turnover twelve months ago amounted to £6OOO, whereas for the year just ended it . totalled about £BO,OOO. Messrs Harkness, Dive and Foreman, were re-elected directors Resolutions were carried that the ; as.-ociation lake into their earnest , consideration the advisableness of preparing a contract on the basis ' equitable to the shippor and buyer ; that the Government be urged to enforce the Dairy Industry Act and its regulations respecting short weight ot butter and cbeoße, Government
weights to be acoepted as final between the producer, consignor and buyer ; That the Minister for Rail ways be asked to reduce the freights on dairy salt to the same rate charged on the conveyance for salt for bacon factories ; that the Minister of Railwars be asked to apply to the carriage of dairy produce to iheport of export ho principle now in foroe inconnecioii with the charges on fruit and cream, and in fulfillment of Ins assurance that a uniform rate for a speoific disttnre would bo adopted by the railway Department. The sccre'ary mentioned that plans and specifications had been prepared for the erection of freezing works at Wellington at ail estimated cost of £IB,OOO. Improvements in the Industry. At the meeting of the National Dairy Association this afternoon, resolutions were passed that the interests of the Dairy association and producers be furthered by controling ■ tlie freezing storage at Wellington ; that a meeting of delegates be held at a future date to consider the advisability of the erection of a freezing works at Wellington oonneoted witH the dairying industry. A long discussion took place on tliequestion of shortage in 'lie weight of export butter, and it was suggested that the Government be asked to weigh butter when graded, and cer ilica .es as to weigh and quality to be issued to the producers. A motion that the Government he asked to increase the subsidy granted in connection with the storage of hotter to BAd negatived, and an amendment that the executive ake no action in the matter, carried. It was decided that the question of taxation of co operative companies’ profits be left to the executive of the
association to deal with. A letter was read from the Wei iington Society of Cruelty to Animals protesting against the practice ol dehorning. An animated discussion took place upon the question, the majority of the speakers considering the practice humane and in tlio interests of the cattle. It was eventually decided that, while the meeting ■ recognised that the society is acting [ from humane motives, the association consider the practice tends I greatly to the benefit of the cattle I Replying to a question the PresiJ dent stated that endeavours would he mate to hold meeting of farmers i in the various centres to discuss y important questions affecting the r industry. > During the afternoon a paper was 1 read by Mr Wilkie, Government Vet., on the improvement of the breed of dairy cows.
