OBITUARY.

Says last Thursday’s Christchurch Truth : “ One of the few remaining pioneer settlers of Canterbury— Mr John Broughton—passed away yesterday morning at his residence, Innes’s road. Mr Broughton, who was educated in a military school in Prussia, came to Canterbury in the Cressy, one of the first four ships, in 1850, on board of which he acted as schoolnmster. He had purchased a fifty-acre section in the country, and as was the rule of the Canterbury Association, became entitled to select half an acre of town land. His selection was that piece of land in High street commencing from what was formerly known at the Hall, to Fisher’s corner. A portion of this land, that on which the Hall, formerly occupied by Mr H. E. May, stood, was given by Mr Broughton to the Wesleyan Church, and upon this section the first Wesleyan church in Christchurch was erected. Mr Broughton resided for some years in St. Alban’s lane, where he established an academy, where a number of citizens now occupying responsible positions were educated. He took a very great interest in the Wesleyan Church, and was a local preacher from the year 1853. Mr Broughton was twice married. In 1856 he married Miss Cresswell, who was a fellow passenger with him in the Cressy. She died some years ago, and Mr Broughton was married a second time. A sterling, staightforward, earnest man, Mr Broughton, during his long residence in Canterbury, earned the respect and esteem of all who knew him.” The late Mr Broughton wa3 father of Messrs W. and R. Broughton, of Makuri.
