THE MILLS LIBEL CASE.
BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. Blenheim, This Day. In Mr Mills' action against tho Christchurch Press, claim I*l,ooo, Sir it. Stout urged that tho charge was against tho Government and pointod out that Mr Mills would not go into the box. Constable Jeffries reported that Colonel Hume told hi in ho was transferred because ho interfered in tho last election, and Colonel Humo road over to him tho section of tho regulation bearing on the subject. Colonel Humo was called and denied Jeffries’ statement, which ho said was untrue. Witness told him he was being removed simply because ho had been long enough in Picton. lie knew at the time that correspondence was being received by another department about the disfranchisement of certain elector , but that had nothing to do with the transfer.
Sir K. Stout produced a letter from Mr Mills to the Hon. Mr Carroll slating the names of those omitted from the roll prepared by Jeffries. The case was adjourned.
