Pahiatua School Committee.

A meeting of the members of the Pahiatua School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: —Mr G. Moore (Chairman), , Messrs Fraser, Godfrey, and Reeve, Hon. Secretary. The Headmaster’s report was read as follows :—“ I have to report that the number on the books has reached 800, and the average attendance for the month of November is 248, i.e. 81 per cent on roll. It would have been much higher but several wet days caused a poor attendance. The average for this week, up to and including to-day, is 261 ; and for last week 243. The highest attendance for November was 266; but yesterday it was 267. For the corresponding month of last year the roll number was 254, and the average attendance 165. 4 Both roll number and attendance are increasing, and aro likely to do so, especially if your committee puts the Compulsory Attendance Act in foree. I think, then, that the time to ask for an additional pupil teacher has arrived, and also for increased accommodation. The large room, with seating accommodation for 90, has constantly over 100 present, and frequently about 120. The infant room, with seating accommodation for 50, has from 70 to 75 present. If this were urged on the Board at once, perhaps the promised additions would be carried out during the Christmas holidays. The swimming on Friday afternoon has brought about the desired result, for the attendance on that afternoon is not appreciably below that of any other. With regard to the school grounds, beyond what I* reported last month, nothing calls for special mention. Should any question arise at your meetings, in which I eould bo of assistance professionally or otherwise, I shall be most happy to render it, for I am always at home on the night of the meeting.” It was resolved that the Secretary write to the Education Board enclosing a copy of tse report and urging the Board to make the necessary enlargements to the school buildings. The committee passed a resolution to the effect that the act referred to would be strictly enforced. Several accounts were passed for payment and a few matters of minor details were discussed, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair
