Gilbert Casey has published a statement announcing the reconstruction of the New Australian scheme. All offices held under the old constitution are now declared vacant. He says his investigation into the local working of the old scheme discloses a highly unsatisfactory state of affairs. Casev intends to despatch fresh parties, probably by a steamer, to New Australia. A fseling prevails in the northern collieries that the hewing rate will be materially reduced this month. Received 10.40 a.m. Sydney, This Day. The Legislative Assembly after considering the Council's amendments in the Labour Settlement Bill decided to lay the measure aside. Adelaide, This Day. Speaking about the result of her lour through the colonies, Mrs Besant said she thought the New Zealanders were less receptive than the Australians. The former seem so well satislied and comfortable in this life that they do sot appear to eare much for intellectual movements. They are active-minded enough politically and in faot are purely practical. In committee on the Land and Income Tax, an amendment was carried by 57 to '25, for an increased laud tax exemption from £IOO to £SOO. The Government voted with the minority. The Premier intimnted the amendment meant the loss of £160,000, which would have to be met by increasing the income tax. PittTft, This Day. Mr Richardson succeeds Mr Murmion as Minister of Mines. Mr Parker, Colonial Secretary, has resigned, it is believed owing to frietion in the Cabinet.
