Thkrf. is still a chance of the Mangatainoka bridge difficulty being settled. Athough the County Councillors at the meeting yesterday declined to confirm the action of their sub committee in fixing tho county’s liability for the cost of maintenance and repairs of tho structure in the proportion ofone-third, they agreed to accept responsibility for the payment of one-fifth, that being the proportion which their contribution towards the amount required for the erection of the bridge bears to tho whole. The responsibility now rests with the members of the Borough Council. If they agree to accept this amount, the work can ho proceeded with at once without further trouble. If they decline, and resolve to have the matter referred to a eo omission, they must be prepared 10 . ecept the responsibility for the consequences which a necessarily-long delay must inevitably entail. Probably six months would elapse before the decision of the Commissioners would be made known, and by that time winter would again he with us to prevent the erection of the bridge until the return of summer. The Borough Council have already accepted a tender for the work, and unless allowed to proceed the contractor would have good cause for action against tho members of the local body having control of the work. It must be remembered also that unless the Government subsidy of £IOOO is utilised there is a chance of the vote lapsing altogether. Obviously the best thing the Council can da is to aecept the inevitable, agree to the proportions of the contributions as insisted on by the County Council, and have an important and necessary work pushed on without any further delay,
