NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. Per Press Association. Appeal Court. Wellington, This Day. The Appeal Court held that the transactions in re Chambers’ e«tate ought not to be treated as a mere scheme to evade payment of duties, but that the deeds were liable to duty, as deeds of gift. Costs were allowed the Commissioner of Taxes on the highest scale. The Wairarapa’s Mails. Wellington, This Day. It is believed all letters by the Wairarapa are recovered and delivered, and many newspapers and packets are lying at Auckland without addresses, application for which will be duly attended to. Congratulating Mr Pirani. Palmerston North, November 13. A public meeting was held last night to congratulate the member for Palmerston, Mr Fred Pirani, on his actions in Parliament during the session just closed. Despite the stormy weather there was a good attendance. The Mayor presided. A number of complimentary speeches were delivered, and Mr Pirani, in responding, briefly alluded to the work of the session. In the course of his speech he denied that any great efforts had been made to whip members in support of Government measures. Mosgiel Woollen Co. Dunedin, This Day. The Mosgiel "Woollen Co.'s adopted report declared a 7 per cent, dividend for the year. An 111-fated Schooner. Napier, This Day. The schooner Heroine ashore near Hokitika arrived here in August in a battered condition after a tempestnous voyage from Sydney. The cost of repairs and refitting was above X4OO. She was only eight mouths afloat. Wellington A. and P. Show. Wellington, This Day. A large number of visitors are in town for tho A. and P. Show, which opened to-day, It is a publio holiday to-morrow, when the Goveraor aud Lady Glasgow will attend. There is an excellent show of fat cattle and horses. Lincoln, Romney Marsh, and Southdown are tho chief classes of sheep, and Ayrshire and Hereford in cattle. There is a good display of produce. The attendance to-day is limited. The judging is proceeding. Extra - Sessional Utterances. Wellington, This Day. The Minister for Labor will shortly deliver public addresses in Auckland and other leading centres especially directed to labor organisation upon the recent labor legislation and also that contemplated in the immediate future. The Fruit Industry. Wellington, This Day. The ffavernment intend to procure two evaporating machines for drying fruit. They will bo used by fruit experts in affording fruit growers practical demonstration of the utilising of inferior fruit for market. The Gothic. Wellington, This Day.
